FOOT MEASUREMENT FOR SHOE DESIGN - MEASUREMENT METHOD

1. Scope of application

This standard specifies the method for measuring foot dimensions (irrespective of age and gender) for the purpose of designing various types of shoes.

2. Measuring instruments

2.1 A human anatomy ruler Martin divided to millimeters for measuring height dimensions (see Figure 1 - Appendix).

2.2 A plastic-coated tape measure divided to millimeters for measuring width dimensions (see Figure 1 - Appendix).

2.3 A caliper divided to millimeters for measuring width dimensions (see Figure 1 - Appendix).

2.4 An angle gauge for measuring angles.

3. Measurement principles

3.1 Foot measurement must be carried out in both sitting and standing positions (see Figure 2 - Appendix).

3.2 When measuring in a sitting position, the person being measured must sit on a chair with their legs perpendicular to the plane of the sole of the foot.

3.3 When measuring in a standing position, the person being measured must stand naturally.

3.4 The person being measured must wear appropriate socks for each type of shoe, following the measurer's instructions.

3.5 Both feet must be measured.

3.6 When measuring circumferences, the measuring tape must be placed at the correct measurement points. (Measurement points are determined by palpating bone joints and muscles - see Figure 3 - Appendix). Do not stretch the tape - the circumference measurement must form a plane parallel to the ground.

3.7 When measuring width dimensions, the two ends of the caliper must be placed accurately at the two measurement points.

4. Measurement methods and regulations for the system of measurements

4.1 The metric system is the only system used for measuring foot dimensions.

4.2 Millimeter is the unit of length, width, and circumference measurements of the foot.

4.3 The measurement methods are described specifically in the table below.

1 Metatarsal joint circumference Measure around the widest part of the foot. Place the tape from the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe to the fifth toe and back to the starting point. (When dealing with a wide foot, slightly stretch the tape). The person being measured should sit naturally, with the foot placed on a plane perpendicular to the leg.
2 Ball of foot circumference Measure at the midpoint of the length of the foot passing through the highest point of the ball of the foot. Place the tape at the midpoint of the longitudinal arch of the foot. The person being measured should sit naturally, with the foot placed on a plane perpendicular to the leg.
3 Heel circumference (or also called ankle circumference) Measure at the protruding point of the heel and up to the tibia. Place the tape through the midpoint of the heel circle up to the ankle crease (ankle fold) at the talus joint. The person being measured should sit naturally, with the foot placed on a plane perpendicular to the leg.
4 Ankle circumference Measure around the ankle at the narrowest point above the ankle. Place the tape perpendicular to the axis of the foot. The person being measured should stand straight on a flat surface.
5 Calf circumference Measure around the calf at the widest point. Place the tape perpendicular to the axis of the foot. The person being measured should stand straight on a flat surface.
6 Below-knee circumference Measure around the lower leg at the narrowest point below the knee. Place the tape perpendicular to the axis of the foot. The person being measured should stand straight on a flat surface.
7 Foot length Measure the distance from the protruding point of the heel to the longest toe tip. The person being measured should stand straight so that weight is evenly distributed on both feet.
8 Foot width Measure the horizontal distance between the vertical lines touching the first and fifth metatarsals. The person being measured should sit naturally, with the foot placed on a plane perpendicular to the leg.
9 Heel width Measure the widest distance of the heel (corresponding to the two ankles). The person being measured should sit naturally, with the foot placed on a plane perpendicular to the leg.
10 Big toe thickness Measure the distance from the plane where the foot rests to the highest point of the big toe. The person being measured should sit naturally, with the foot placed on a plane perpendicular to the leg.
11 Ground-to-medial malleolus height Measure the distance from the plane where the foot rests to the top of the medial malleolus. The person being measured should sit naturally, with the foot placed on a plane perpendicular to the leg.
12 Foot height Measure the distance from the ground where the foot rests to the ankle crevice, the upper part of the talus. The person being measured should sit naturally, with the foot placed on a plane perpendicular to the leg.
13 Ground-to-calf height Measure the distance from the plane where the foot rests to the point where the calf circumference is measured. Place the tape on the inner side of the foot. The person being measured should sit naturally, with the foot placed on a plane perpendicular to the leg.
14 Leg height Measure the distance from the point where the below-knee circumference is measured to the ground where the foot rests. Place the tape on the inner side of the foot. The person being measured should sit naturally, with the foot placed on a plane perpendicular to the leg.
15 Hallux angle a1 Measure the angle formed by the inner edge of the foot and the outer edge of the hallux.
16 Little toe angle a2

Measure the angle formed by the outer edge of the foot and the outer edge of the little toe.
