FIELD TESTING OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF
VARIOUS TYPES OF FERTILIZERS ON CROP YIELDS,
AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT QUALITY 10TCN 216-2003

1. Principles:
These regulations specify the main contents and methods for evaluating the agronomic effectiveness of fertilizers that must be tested.
2. Content of testing:
Quantity and duration of testing for one type of fertilizer:
2.1. For fertilizers used for multiple types of crops:
- Narrow-scale testing (standard experiments):
Conduct testing with at least three types of crops: rice, field crops, and perennial crops (industrial crops or fruit trees). Testing should be conducted on a minimum of two types of soil. The testing period for short-cycle crops is two seasons, and for long-cycle crops, it is one year (from the harvest of the previous season to the harvest of the next season).
- Wide-scale testing: equivalent to the number of crops and soil areas where narrow-scale testing was conducted but only one season (for short-cycle crops) or one year (for long-cycle crops) with controls.
2.2. For fertilizers used for a single type of crop (specialized crop):
2.2.1. Narrow-scale testing:
- For short-cycle crops: test two seasons across different locations on two types of soil.
- For long-cycle crops: test one year across three different soil areas.
2.2.2. Wide-scale testing: equivalent to the number of crops and soil types where narrow-scale testing was conducted, one season (for short-cycle crops) or one year (for long-cycle crops) with controls.
3. Testing methods:
3.1. Number of test formulas: A testing project shall not exceed five formulas including the control [four formulas of the tested fertilizer (root or leaf application) + one control].
3.2. Test formulas:
3.2.1. For foliar fertilizers:
- Control formula: spray distilled water with the same volume as the test formula.
- Test formula: Apply the tested fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended dosage, concentration, and timing. Additionally, the testing unit may propose other formulas, but the total number of formulas must not exceed the limit specified in Section 3.1.
3.2.2. For root fertilizers:
- Control formula: apply according to the recommended rate by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for the local soil and crop type.
- Test formula: apply according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Additionally, the testing unit may propose other formulas, but the total number of formulas must not exceed the limit specified in Section 3.1.
3.3. Layout method for testing: follow the standard layout method for field experiments.
3.3.1. Narrow-scale testing: Minimum repetition is three times
- For annual crops: minimum plot area is 20 m²2.
- For perennial crops: minimum plot area is 100 m²2 (equivalent to the area for 10 trees) for fruit trees and industrial crops planted at less than 1,000 trees/ha, and equivalent to the area for 50 trees for crops planted at more than 1,000 trees/ha (such as tea and coffee).
3.3.2. Wide-scale testing: no repetition
- For annual crops: minimum area per test formula is 5,000 m²2 , maximum is 10,000 m²2.
- For perennial crops: minimum area per test formula is 10,000 m²2, maximum is 20,000 m²2.
3.4. Fertilizer application: dosage, ratio, time, and period of application must comply with the manufacturer's recommendations.
3.5. For special subjects (flowers, ornamental plants, golf course grass...), the manufacturer must cooperate with the testing unit to propose testing methods, report to the Directorate of Agricultural Extension and Forestry Extension, and obtain written approval before conducting tests.
4. Data collection:
4.1. Content of data collection:
4.1.1. Soil:
- Soil group, soil type (according to Vietnam classification).
- Analysis data: pHKCl,, CEC, Organic matter, Total N, P2O5 and K2O total and available.
(For acid sulfate soils and saline soils, additional indicators such as mobile Fe, Al, and electrical conductivity are required. For soil amendments, in addition to the above analysis, particle size distribution, water stable aggregates, and other indicators affected by the amendment must also be analyzed).
If the fertilizer's purpose is to supplement secondary and micronutrients, additional corresponding analyses (total and available) are required.
4.1.2. Multi-year average meteorological data and data for the experimental season.
4.1.3. Crops:
- For annual crops: yield components and yield.
- For perennial crops: yield data, and for fruit trees, additional weight and color of fruits.
- Agricultural product quality: for crops significantly affected by fertilizers, specific quality indicators must be analyzed according to requirements stated in the testing permit.
4.2. Method of data collection:
4.2.1. For narrow-scale testing:
- Yield components: according to the method prescribed for each indicator and crop.
- Yield: collected from the entire plot.
- Agricultural product quality indicators (if applicable): according to current analytical methods.
4.2.2. For wide-scale testing: collect yield statistics at ten points.
- Short-cycle crops: 10 m²2/ point.
- Perennial crops: 5 trees/point.
5. Reporting test results and publishing results:
5.1. Data processing:
Data collected from narrow-scale experiments must be statistically processed using appropriate biological statistical methods.
5.2. Content of reports:
5.2.1. Cover page presentation (from top to bottom):
- Author's name and compiling unit.
- Registration unit or individual for trial.
- Unit conducting the trial.
- Name of the trial result report: clearly state the names of the products being tested.
- Location and time of the trial result report.
5.2.2. Content section:
5.2.2.1. Narrow scope trial name.
5.2.2.2. Purpose and requirements of the trial.
5.2.2.3. Conditions and methods of the trial:
- Trial location and time (clearly state the household head's name, land use history for the previous 2-3 crops regarding crop type and fertilizer).
- Soil characteristics, crop varieties, cultivation techniques applied in the trial process.
- Trial formula, number of repetitions.
- Area of the trial plot.
- Trial layout method.
- Data collection and processing method.
5.2.2.4. Narrow scope trial results:
- Impact of the tested fertilizer on yield components and crop yield.
- Impact of the tested fertilizer on agricultural product quality.
- Economic effectiveness of the tested fertilizer.
5.2.2.5. Broad scope trial results are presented immediately following the narrow scope trials for each type of fertilizer and crop.
5.2.2.6. Conclusion and recommendations: (by the trial unit).
5.2.2.7. Confirmation by the trial unit (signatures, stamp confirmation).
5.2.3. Appendices accompanying the report:
- Copy of the trial permit.
- Certificate of product toxicity issued by the competent authority or declaration of safety by the registration unit or individual regarding environmental safety.
- Quality component analysis report of the fertilizer conducted by the testing unit.
- Documents on the effectiveness of the tested fertilizer from previous trials and sales results abroad (if imported fertilizer).
- Local confirmation of the farmer households involved in the broad scope trial and their results.
- Confirmation by the trial management agency (the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development or the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development).
- Original data from the trials.
5.3. Publication of Results:
The trial results must be reported for acceptance to the Science and Technology Council (specializing in fertilizers) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
